How to build a sentence with "Gustar" - To like

The verb, “GUSTAR” in Spanish can be a little complicated, however, if you learn how to break it down, it will be very simple.

Let’s break it down even further:


A = all the sentences begin with this letter when expressing what something/someone likes


Preposition pronoun = this follows the “A”


Indirect object pronoun = look at what gets the same pronouns (él, ella, usted) & (ellos, ellas, ustedes)


Gustar = if the amount of what is being liked is in the plural, you will use “gustan” and if it’s in the singular, you will use “gusta”


Example = I like houses (because “I” like more than one house, I will use “gustan”)

She likes the house (because “she” only likes one house, she will use, “gusta”)


Definite article = every noun except for a person, will get a definite article


Noun = this is what is being liked



Now let’s combine it for quick memory:


I like = A mí me gusta/n

You (informal) like = A tí te gusta/n

She likes = A ella le gusta/n

He likes = A él le gusta/n

You (formal) like = A usted le gusta/n

We like = A nosotros nos gusta/n

They (masculine) like = A ellos les gusta/n

They (female) like = A ellas les gusta/n

You (all) like = A ustedes les gusta/n

I like apples (manzanas) = A mí me gustan las manzanas

I like the apple = A mí me gusta la manzana

You (informal) like the computer = A tí te gusta la computadora

You (informal) like computers = A tí te gustan las computadoras

She likes houses = A ella le gustan las casas

She likes the house = A ella le gusta la casa

He likes the door = A él le gusta la puertas

He likes doors = A él le gustan las puertas

You (formal) like the garden = A usted le gusta el jardín

You (formal) like the gardens = A usted le gustan los jardines

We like kitchens = A nosotros nos gustan las cocinas

We like the kitchen = a nosotros nos gusta la cocina

They (masculine) like the pool = A ellos les gusta la piscina

They (masculine) like pools = A ellos les gustan las piscinas

They (female) like hamburgers = A ellas les gustan las hamburguesas

They (female) like the hamburger = A ellas les gusta la hamburguesa

You (all) like the painting = A ustedes les gusta la pintura

You (all) like the paintings = A ustedes les gustan las pinturas
